Marine Institute Supports Plastic Free Week in Galway
Galway City Council invited Dr Peter Heffernan, Marine Institute CEO to take up the challenge of living 'plastic free' for the week 5th February as an Ambassador for it Plastic Free Week in Galway City.
"As an Ambassador for Plastic Free Week, I am delighted to be involved and help promote the avoidance of single-use plastics and replacing plastics with alternatives as much as possible. It's important to highlight that up to a truck load of plastic waste finds its way into the ocean every minute of every day. This creates a huge risk, as it's estimated that by 2050 there could be more plastic by weight than fish in the ocean unless behaviours change."
Dr Peter Heffernan has invited staff at the Marine Institute to join him in this initiative to reduce, reuse and replace plastic items where possible.
"We are very keen to show how the Institute can look at alternatives making small changes that can result in big impacts with plastic reduction. A number of staff initiatives have already taken place at the Institute including replacing plastic drinking bottles with glass as well as using reusable coffee cups which has been welcomed."
