Marine Institute welcomes Canadian Embassy delegation

7th September 2022: The Marine Institute was delighted to host a delegation from the Canadian Embassy to its Oranmore facility in Co Galway earlier this week (5 September 2022).

Suzanne Drisdelle (Senior Trade Commissioner) and Caroline Donnelly (Trade Commissioner) met with the Marine Institute’s CEO, Dr Paul Connolly, to discuss mutual areas of interest on Atlantic Ocean research and the Blue Economy.

The meeting explored the Marine Institute’s current and future work projects and the work of Canadian companies and organisations in the ocean economy sector. The meeting was also beneficial in identifying partnerships for research opportunities.

Discussions will continue over the coming months as both countries are highly interested in harnessing Atlantic Ocean research opportunities. In 2013, the Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance (AORA), between Canada, the European Union and the United States, was launched following the signing of the Galway Statement on Atlantic Ocean Cooperation.

Connections between the Marine Institute and the Canadian Embassy have strengthened in the past decade. In 2016, Canadian Ambassador to Ireland, Kevin Vickers, visited the Marine Institute in Oranmore to hear about ongoing collaborations between the Institute and Canada.   And in 2013, the Marine Institute was pleased to welcome then Canadian Ambassador to Ireland, Loyola Hearn, on board the RV Celtic Explorer docked in Galway. He met Irish and Canadian collaborators on a transatlantic fisheries survey bound for St John’s, Newfoundland.
