Obituary Notice: Walter Munk, World-Renowned Oceanographer, Revered Scientist
Walter Munk a world-renowned oceanographer and treasure in ocean science and geophysics died February 8 at his home in La Jolla, California. He was 101.

e Institute in 2013. He has been an inspiration to many who work in oceanography where he inspired and advocated the importance of taking risk, pursuing new directions, and embracing the big ideas that could transform the world.
Working in science for 80 years, Walter Munk made groundbreaking observations of our ocean. His work has transformed peoples understanding of nature including waves, ocean temperature, and tidal energy in the deep ocean, ocean acoustics and the rotation of the earth.
One of the most distinguished and honoured scientists in the world, his accomplishments are many. From advising on the prediction of waves in WW II to supporting American oceanography in anti-submarine warfare, national defense and climate change his life's work will continue to inspire generations across the world and into the future.
