Explorers Education Programme Teacher Training Courses available in five counties this Summer

6th May 2022: The Marine Institute's Explorers Education Programme are delighted to announce that the Explorers Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Summer five-day Teacher Training courses (4th – 8th July), are now available to book in Galway, Dublin, Waterford, Kerry, and West Cork.

"The Explorers teachers training programme has been running for nearly fifteen years in Galway, and more recently in Blackrock, Waterford and Tralee. After a successful virtual course held last year, the team are excited to introduce the new face-to-face course in West Cork this year," said Cushla Dromgool-Regan, Explorers Strategic Education and Communications Manager, Camden Education Trust.

The week long course provides teachers with an opportunity to connect with their local seashore and learn new ideas for outdoor education, as well as bringing the seashore into the classroom.

"Everyone is eager to meet face-to-face this year with the school teachers. The team are looking forward to providing practical seashore activities, covering the sciences, learning about the marine environment and living things, environmental awareness and care, as well as introducing maths, PE and well-being games. With a combination of outdoor fieldtrips to the shore and an introduction to marine themes in the classroom, this course is a favourite of teachers and can book up very quickly," added Ms Dromgool-Regan.

Teachers are provided with a pack of Explorers teaching resources to take back to their classrooms and will also learn about the work of the Marine Institute ranging from marine research, sustainable fisheries, the environment and climate change.

Ms Patricia Orme, Corporate Services Director of the Marine Institute said "we are delighted to see the Explorers teams return to running face-to-face courses for teachers. We hope that these courses will enable teachers to help children develop a greater appreciation of the importance of the ocean and an understanding of the significant impact of the ocean on our daily lives. We look forward to reconnecting with the teachers as they work to educate our future ocean champions."

The Explorers Education Programme is managed by the Camden Education Trust and support services are provided by Galway Atlantaquaria. The Explorers teams involved in the CPD training include Marine Dimensions (Dublin), Leave no Trace - Ireland (Waterford), Lifetime Lab (Cork), Sea Synergy (Kerry), and Galway Atlantaquaria (Galway).

The Explorers Education Programme is funded by the Marine Institute, Ireland's state agency for marine research, technology development and innovation.
