Organisation Description:

The Marine Institute is the national agency responsible for marine research, technology, development and innovation (RTDI). The Marine Institute seeks to assess and realise the economic potential of Ireland’s 220-million-acre marine resource; promote the sustainable development of marine industry through strategic funding programmes and scientific services; and safeguard the marine environment through research and environmental monitoring. The Institute works in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine (DAFM) and a network of other Government Departments, semi-state agencies, national and international marine partners.

Summary of the Role:

This important role supports our organisation in delivery of its essential work programmes. This role provides candidates with the opportunity to work in a diverse organisation which invests in and celebrates its people. You will work within the Fisheries Ecosystems Advisory Services (FEAS) in the Marine Institute in the Shellfish and Environment inshore fisheries team specialising in the stock assessment of shellfish including bivalve molluscs, whelks and crustaceans and in evaluating the effects of fishing on marine protected areas (Special Areas of Conservation and Special Protection Areas) including effects on marine mammals, seabirds and benthic habitats. The team produces annual advice on the management of shellfish stocks based on a field programme that includes research surveys at sea, port sampling, observer work at sea, stock assessments and habitat surveys and assessments. The team is also involved in a number of projects that support the advice including restoration of oysters, assessing by-catch in set net fisheries, transitioning high impact to low impact fisheries, acoustic telemetry of endangered elasmobranchs that are at risk of by-catch and deployment of vessel monitoring systems on inshore fishing vessels.

This temporary specific purpose contract of employment covering a career break for the current post holder and will be for up to 2 years until the 30th of October 2026. The successful candidate will be on probation for the first 6 months of this contract.

Educational and Professional Requirements:

  • A Degree in a relevant scientific area.
  • Relevant post qualification work experience in fisheries including surveys, estimation of biological parameters, data management, analysis of spatial data
  • High level of proficiency in R programming language
  • High level of proficiency with GIS softwares such as ArcGIS and QGIS.
  • Demonstrated strong data handling skills.
  • Sea going experience and sufficiently fit to pass an ENG II Medical and participate in appropriate mandatory safety related training.
  • A high level of computer literacy including the use of standard office software packages.
  • Proven track record in effectively preparing scientific reports or peer-reviewed scientific publications.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively at all levels both in writing and verbally with technical and scientific and non-technical groups.
  • Good time management, organisation and administrative skills and the ability to prioritise and meet deadlines independently and with the team
  • A full clean Driving License.
