Explorers CPD Teachers Training
The Explorers Education Programme offers a series of face-to-face and online teachers training courses bringing the seashore and ocean themes to the classroom.
The 2023 TEACHERS TRAINING COURSES APPROVED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION & SKILLS:

3. EXPLORE THE SEASHORE-CREATIVE CURRICULAR LEARNING & SKILLS DEVELOPMENT – ONLINE COURSE

1. SDG’S & A HEALTHY OCEAN: MARINE LIFE, PLASTIC POLLUTION, & CLIMATE CHANGE
1 x venue – Blackrock Education Centre, Dublin.
This course will explore how marine themes can be introduced across the SDGs, focussing on climate change and its impact on the ocean, marine biodiversity, and solutions to combat plastic pollution. The course will include various fun ice-breakers, group activities and exercises to encourage interaction and teamwork. To establish the barriers to teaching SDG’s Day 1 workshop will be held using trigger questions and introducing cocreation strategies to form solutions. Throughout the course to maximise engagement, pair work and whole group activities, collaborative tasks and discussion groups will be carried out including creative writing, walking debates, creating visual arts through different textiles, as well as taking part in co-operative games inside and outside the classroom.
Lunch will be provided daily.

2. EXPLORING THE SEASHORE USING CREATIVE CROSS CURRICULAR LEARNING AND SKILLS DEVELOPMENT
The course will focus on using the marine environment through cross-curricular activities to support teaching and learning in the primary school classroom and on the seashore. It will explore scientific methods and techniques and focus on the development of key competencies of the new Curriculum Framework. Teachers will integrate literacy and numeracy into several lessons and reflect on environmental awareness and care of our ocean. They will examine theory and techniques for exploring climate change, marine litter, biodiversity loss, conservation and empathy for the natural world using the UN sustainable Development Goals 12, 13 and 14, STEM, and a range of creative and practical inquiry-based exercises.
Teachers are to bring waterproof footwear and clothing for seashore fieldwork, which will be carried out on local shores throughout the course. DAY 1: Please wear clothing / footwear for a beach walk outdoors: Wellies/ hiking boots/ raincoat / sun screen/ sun hat.

3. EXPLORERS ONLINE COURSE: EXPLORE THE SEASHORE-CREATIVE CURRICULAR LEARNING & SKILLS DEVELOPMENT
The Explorers Education Programme online course is run with the support of the Mayo Education Centre. This online course provides teachers with the flexibility to engage in activities that can be carried out at home. It offers a range of the Explorers online resources, and introductory filmed sessions of how to incorporate marine content through science, maths, english, geography, and the arts into the class curriculum.
