Galway Atlantaquaria is delighted to launch its programme of events to celebrate the Annual World Oceans Day, joining hundreds of organizations all over the world in promoting the health of the Sea. The themes of the day include promoting awareness of our behavior; how we impact the oceans and how the oceans influence us. The day's exhibits include ideas on how we use the ocean's resources, in a more responsible way, with the Smartbay team showcasing how marine technology is used to create ocean energy. The Marine Institute's Explorers Education Programme will also be promoting its "Exploring Our Ocean" arts activities with opportunities to learn about what we love about the ocean. 

David O'Sullivan is also going to be speaking at World Ocean's day highlighting INFOMAR's mapping activities. David is a Marine Biologist and Hydrographer with INFOMAR, Irelands National Seabed mapping programme. The program produces high resolution maps of the seafloor that underpin marine research and helps create awareness of our natural resources and ecosystem for which we are all responsible. He will be delighted to meet with you at World Oceans Day, explain the science behind the project and also show you exciting seabed imagery of underwater mountains and shipwrecks beneath the waves.'

Around the world, thousands of people will be gathering at hundreds of events to celebrate World Oceans Day. Galway Atlantaquaria will be hosting a number of activities including: interactive science and cartoon drawing workshops, art 'n crafts and face painting. They will also be hosting a special screening of 'The Octonauts Pelicans cartoon' every hour, for our younger marine enthusiasts!

Come celebrate World Oceans Day at Galway Atlantaquaria, Salthill on Sunday June 12th from 11am until 5pm. celebrate all our oceans have to offer with a full program of interactive exhibits focused on fun, information, education and science.

World Oceans Day is a United Nations recognized day of celebration and action for the ocean, held every June 8th. The concept for a "World Ocean Day" was first proposed in 1992 by the Government of Canada at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, and was officially recognized by the UN in December 2008. The Ocean Project has been the lead organization promoting and coordinating this event since 2002, in partnership with many other organizations and networks, including World Ocean Network and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
