Strong Run of Salmon into Burrishoole Fishery

Over the past few weeks Burrishoole Fishery in Co Mayo has experienced a very strong run of grilse – many of a large average size.  Despite the presence of a large stock of fish, "angling has been frustratingly slow and only a handful of fish have been taken," according to Fishery Manager Pat Hughes.

"Despite the very poor catches anglers have found the whole experience of fishing amongst so many fresh fish rewarding in itself.  Many experienced anglers have claimed that they have never seen so many salmon showing on the surface and certainly we have to look back to the mid-90's to recall a comparable stock of fish in Furnace.  I am convinced that once we get even a small change in weather conditions some anglers are in for bumper catches."

Burrishoole had one of its best spring salmon runs for many years throughout the April and May period but anglers have reported that many large fish are still present in Furnace, including some very bright, fresh, summer salmon.

Rods are still available on the fishery but bookings will increase significantly once the large stock of fish settle and catches improve.
