Residues Monitoring
Like other livestock-rearing sectors, fish farmers may use authorised veterinary medicines and treatments to control disease and infestation. In some cases residues may remain in animal tissues, often at very low levels. By obliging member states to implement national residue control plans, the EU Residues Directive (96/23) ensures that animal and animal products pose no threat to consumers and that good practices are adhered to on farms.
Working closely with the Sea Fisheries Protection Authority, Food Safety Authority of Ireland and the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, our Residues team monitors farmed finfish for certain veterinary drug residues and other substances to ensure conformance with the Directive.
Our surveillance programme tests tissue for the presence of residues of certain authorised medicines which may be used. It also tests for the presence of treatments that should not be used in aquaculture, such as dyes and steroids, as well as contaminants such as heavy metals, PCBs and aflatoxins.
