EurOcean 2007The EurOCEAN 07 Conference will take place in Aberdeen, Scotland, on Friday 22nd June 2007, featuring keynote speakers and a far-reaching debate on the future of European Marine Science.

It follows the highly successful EurOCEAN 2004 Conference in Ireland, whose “Galway Declaration” had a profound impact on European Marine Policies and contributed to the elevation of marine sciences and technologies in the EU Marine Green Paper, as well as influencing the inclusion of  “marine science & technology -  a priority cross cutting theme” in the EU 7th Framework Research Programme (2007 – 2013).

EurOCEAN 2007 in Aberdeen provides a unique opportunity for the European Marine Science & Technology Community to further influence future European marine polices and strategies.

At the end of the Conference, Dr Peter Heffernan, CEO of the Marine Institute will present the new “Aberdeen Declaration” for endorsement as the collective message of the European Marine Science & Technology Community to Commissioner Borg, the Commission and our Member States.

In launching EurOCEAN 2007, Commissioner Borg stated that “Science is crucial to the future development of Europe. We need to ensure that science is organised in the best possible manner so as to provide the very best policy advice. It is very important for us to know whether we have raised the right issues in the Green Paper and whether we have done it to the right degree. Your contribution to this process will be crucial. I look forward to hearing from you and wish you a successful and fruitful day on the 22nd of June 2007. "

The Commissioner has handed us the challenge – the ball is now in our court!
