Sea science and the seashore at Galway Science and Technology Virtual Festival
12 November 2020 - The Marine Institute and the Explorers Education Programme will once again participate in the Galway Science and Technology Festival, which is being offered as a virtual experience for families this year on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd November 2020.
Dr Paul Connolly, CEO of the Marine Institute said, "The Marine Institute has supported the annual Galway Science and Technology Festival for many years, and is delighted to engage with parents and children through an online platform this year. The annual outreach event nurtures students' interest and curiosity in science and technology subjects, and is also an opportunity for the Marine Institute, and our Explorers Education Programme, to raise awareness about the importance of our ocean and the work of our scientists."
Join the Marine Institute's Explorers Education team as they go on a journey to the rocky seashore – exploring one of themost extreme places on earth that animals live. Find out about seashells, including some of the tiniest periwinkles and top shells with the coolest spirals feasting on seaweeds. On the lower shore, help the team hunt down the carnivorous dog whelk - the shellfish that loves to make limpets into soup. The 'Wild about Wildlife on the Seashore' series will be broadcast on the Galway Science and Technology Festival YouTube Channel at 11am on Saturday 21st November and 3pm on Sunday 22nd November.
Step aboard the Marine Institute's marine research vessel, the RV Celtic Explorer as part of the Galway Science and Technology Virtual Festival Show. Discover some of the unique features of Ireland's marine research vessel and why it is important for fisheries research, climate studies and seabed mapping. The Galway Science and Technology Virtual Festival Show will be streamed live from www.galwayscience.ie from 11am – 12.30pm on Sunday 22nd November.
After the virtual show, jump aboard the RV Celtic Explorer and take a 3D virtual tour, or enjoy downloadable resources, videos and interactive activities that explore Ireland's marine resource from the Marine Institute's Oceans of Learning series at www.marine.ie.
The Marine Institute is also encouraging children to get creative and colour in a picture of the RV Celtic Explorer. The winning entry will receive a LEGO City Ocean Exploration Submarine Deep Sea Set, and there's also two LEGO City Ocean Exploration Mini-Submarine Sets on offer. To enter, download a copy of the colouring competition from the Marine Institute's website, post a photo of your finished creation to social media and tag @MarineInst on Twitter or @marineinstituteireland on Facebook. Winners will be announced on Friday 27th November.
