Oceans of Opportunity - EU Funding for Marine Research
An information day at the Marine Institute, Wednesday 3rd October, will advise Irish marine researchers and research teams on competitive marine research funding opportunities in 2008 under the EU 7th Framework Programme (FP7) 2007-20013. FP7 funding can complement and expand the international component of cutting edge national research planned under Sea Change, the national strategy to maximise the economic, social and environmental importance of Ireland’s marine resources through research and innovation.
According to Geoffrey O’Sullivan, International Co-operation Manager at the Marine Institute, the EU 7th Framework programme provides major opportunities for marine research and technology funding with marine sciences & technologies identified as a priority cross-cutting theme in FP7.
“The full implementation of the marine sciences and technologies as a ‘priority cross cutting theme’ should result in marine funding opportunities in all thematic areas and Horizontal Programmes in future calls for proposals.”
The meeting will address opportunities for funding research on Climate Change, Marine Environment, Seafood, Fisheries and Aquaculture in 2008. Presentations will include advice from Ireland’s National FP7 co-ordinator Dr Imelda Lambkin, as well as the first hand experience of Valerie Cummins, CMRC, University College Cork, and David Murphy, AquaTT on the challenges and benefits of securing EU funding. Speakers include Dr John Dardis, National Contact Point for the FP7 Food Programme and Dr Brian Donlon, National Delegate to the Environment Programme.
