Marine Institute’s Dr Fiona Grant honoured with prestigious University of Galway Alumni AwardDr Fiona Grant, Head of International Programmes at the Marine Institute has been honoured with a prestigious University of Galway Alumni Award in recognition of her outstanding leadership and contribution to marine science.

Dr Grant's distinguished career in marine science and her leadership at both national and European levels have played a vital role in addressing global challenges that impact society, the planet and our blue economy. She has been instrumental in shaping Ireland's marine research agenda, notably through her role as National Contact Point and National Delegate for Cluster 6 in Horizon Europe and as Ireland’s representative in the EU Mission to Restore Our Ocean and Waters by 2030. Her election as Chair of the European Marine Board in April 2024 further underscores Dr Grant's commitment to fostering international collaboration and promoting the excellence and impact of Irish marine research on the global stage.

In extending his congratulations to Dr Grant, Dr Rick Officer, CEO of the Marine Institute said:  "Fiona's recognition by the University of Galway is a powerful testament to her unwavering dedication to marine science and her exceptional leadership. Her contributions have not only elevated Ireland's standing in the global marine research community but have also inspired a new generation of scientists. We are immensely proud of Fiona's pivotal role in shaping European marine research strategy, and in enabling the participation of Ireland's marine researchers in collaborative research."
