Marine Institute to showcase research by Cullen Scholarship Students
Over the coming months, the Marine Institute will showcase the 20 postgraduate research students currently completing projects as part of the Cullen Scholarship Programme.
Since 2014, the Cullen Scholarship Programme has provided €5 million in grant-aid to support 51 awards, which include 44 PhD and seven Masters studentships. This programme is funded by the Marine Institute under the Marine Research Programme with the support of the Government of Ireland.
The Cullen Scholarship Programme provides training and professional development opportunities for the next generation of marine scientists and researchers. It contributes to the Marine Institute’s objectives to support sustainable growth in the blue economy, promote innovation, protect marine ecosystems and inform policy, governance and management of Ireland’s marine resources.
Dr Rick Officer, CEO of the Marine Institute said, “The Cullen Fellowship Programme fosters and supports impactful research across a variety of key marine sectors. The programme provides valuable training and builds Ireland’s national marine research capacity. Research conducted by Cullen Scholars also adds great value to the Marine Institute’s role in providing scientific advice and services to support the sustainable management and protection of our ocean.”
Postgraduate students benefit from the academic support of their host Higher Education Institution and the expertise of their Marine Institute co-supervisors, together with the practical training carried out using Marine Institute laboratories and facilities, historical datasets and equipment, including access to the national marine research vessels.
Over the coming months, the Marine Institute will profile a Cullen Scholarship student and their research project every week on the Marine Institute’s Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter (X) and Instagram.
