Research Equipment and Small Infrastructure Call

As part of the preparation of the National Marine Research and Innovation Strategy 2017-2021 the Marine Institute carried out a detailed analysis of national marine research capability and the range of supports that are available to the marine research and innovation community.  The results of this analysis identified a deficit in relation to capital supports for specialist marine research equipment. The Specialist Marine Equipment and Small Infrastructures Call is intended to address a need in the Irish marine research and innovation community. The acquisition of the specialist equipment and small infrastructures should raise the level of performance of the community across all marine research and innovation areas. Specialist marine research equipment and infrastructures were also included in the key actions for Harnessing Our Ocean Wealth. Awards funded by the Marine Institute under this programme will provide assistance for appropriate research activities that support the goals of Harnessing Our Ocean Wealth, and/or address the objectives of other national and international marine strategies/plans.

National Marine Research Infrastructure Access Programme

The Marine Institute has for a number of years operated a successful Research Vessel Access Programme. In association with SmartBay Ireland the Marine Institute provides funding to support researchers with access to the SmartBay Marine and Renewable Energy Test Site through a contribution to additional costs associated with deployments via the National Infrastructure Access Programme (NIAP). The Marine Institute SmartBay NIAP aims to promote synergies between companies and academics in their research and development efforts within the marine sector by facilitating access to the test site and it's associated facilities and supports. The facilities available include:

• Cabled observatory
• Databuoys
• Acoustic array
